Though it's never a practice to celebrate the love month with a significant other, my single friends and I were still able to celebrate love in a different way -- our love for bonding, music and great shows. A day after Valentine's we watched the Singapore run of Wicked, a Broadway Musical at the Marina Bay Sands.
Wicked is based on the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, a parallel novel of the Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. Wicked tells the story of Elphaba, the emerald-skinned girl and the unlikely friendship (and rivalry) that developed between her and Glinda, the beautiful, ambitious blonde girl before they grew to become the Wicked Witch of the West (Elphaba) and the Good Witch of the North (Glinda). It also tells how Elphaba fell prey brought about by twisted stories and public misconception.
Wicked has so many things to like about, from stage design, costume, effects, the plot as well as the cast (Glinda, by the way, reminds me of Elle Woods of Legally Blonde). I was deeply moved by the scenes that left my heart pounding, especially Elphaba & Glinda's Defying Gravity. It's a wonderful song with a wonderful message on fighting and reaching for the top even when something's pulling you down. Such a powerful, inspiring song.
The show is definitely worth watching. So for those of you who are based in Singapore (or nearby countries), grab your tickets now and watch it. The final run will be in April 2012. :)
On a different note: I was with 4 teachers and 1 nurse so they were excited to raid each other's closet and plan on their outfit days before the show. It was actually one of the few moments that they were able to dress up (they're always in uniform). Hahaha! :P
|The Wicked Witches of Monarchy :)|
Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I'm through with playing by the rules
Of someone else's game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes: and leap!
It's time to try
I think I'll try
And you can't pull me down!
I'm through accepting limits
''cause someone says they're so
Some things I cannot change
But till I try, I'll never know!
Too long I've been afraid of
Losing love I guess I've lost
Well, if that's love
It comes at much too high a cost!
I'd sooner buy
Kiss me goodbye
I'm defying gravity
And you can't pull me down.
